Food Pyramid...

Last week we studied the Food Pyramid. We had lots of fun with it and it was a favorite 'science' topic by far.

We studied a different group each day. They cut out pictures from magazines for our big pyramid (at bottom)...each drew their own little one...and Luke and Kendall had to write a few things about each group (like why it was good/bad, how many servings per day, etc.).

Now it's time for some application! :)

Books we used:
Showdown at the Food Pyramid by Rex Barron (good one!)
My Food Pyramid: Eat Right. Exercise. Have Fun. by DK Publishing
The Food Pyramid by Joan Kalbacken
Blastoff Readers, including:
Oils,
Fruits,
Veges,
Grains,
Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese,
Meat and Beans,
and Bon Appetit CD by Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer (we had lots of fun singing and dancing to this one!)

Switching up the School Scene...

Bo had his tonsils and adenoids removed on December 15th. The rest of the week was slow for us, and I ended up bringing school down to the den to work on. It was such an informal and fun feel. Bo and Noah just got to hang with us, so they enjoyed that.

Christmas Symbols Study...

For the short while that we did school in December, we studied a few of our Christmas symbols...to find out the meaning behind them.
First we studied the story of St. Nicholas...

Then wreathes...

Then Christmas trees...

And we were given a special treat of real mistletoe from the Davidsons in early December, so we also studied what was behind that.

And got lots of good kisses in over the month too!

We also enjoyed our time of Advent each night after supper during December. Dad read some Scripture, we discussed a question, prayed, sang a Christmas carol, then Happy B-day to Jesus, then blew the candle out.

Luke To Work With Dad...

Luke went to work with Dad on the Monday after Christmas. It was a full day and Lukey came home a little tired. He watched a lot of Cosby Show on DVD and typed on the computer, played on Dad's ipod, and enjoyed breakfast and lunch out.

Kendall To Work With Dad...

Kendall got to go to work with Dad on New Year's Eve. While there, she enjoyed breakfast and lunch out to eat, typing on the computer, watching movies, and playing games on the ipod.

History, Weeks 11 and 12...

I am waaaaay behind in posting these--we did these 2 chapters back at the end of November. So just for the record...

Week 11 covered:
-King Saul (played charades with all the characteristics of Saul--handsome, tall, king, impatient, disobedient, arrogant, distressed, jealous, suicide---that was fun)
-David
-Solomon (spent some time talking about what we would ask God for if he promised to 'grant one wish'--Solomon asked for wisdom)

Week 12 covered:
-The Phoenicians
-The Kingdom of Israel Divides
-Elijah, the Fiery Prophet

Here is the timeline, in no particular order:

Elijah in a fiery chariot; David playing the harp, with a crown on because he was king, and with the book of Psalms since he wrote a lot of it; Solomon with lots of $$ on him since he was super rich, and lots of hearts on him because he had so many wives; and then Phoenicians with ABC's since they wrote the first phonetic alphabet and a snail since they made dye out of a stinky snail...
