The week at a glance...
Pretest
Hammurabi- he was the king of Babylonia during the late 1700's B.C. He wrote a set of over 300 laws called the Code of Hammurabi. Good laws, but often severe and unfair punishment for breaking them. Anyway, we did a couple of activities related.
I wrote what the Code of Ham. was in 'code form'--no spaces, punctuation, etc. and L and K had to decode it and write it on their papers. It says "The purpose of Hammurabi's nearly 300 laws was to cause justice to prevail in the land, to destroy the wicked and the evil, to prevent the strong from oppressing the weak, and to further the welfare of the people."
This is K's decoding look...
Then I thought it'd be fun to come up with our own set of laws and call it the Code of Watsons. I imagined all kinds of noble rules the kids might come up with. Instead, they came up with this:
I'm not too quite sure about number 10. That was Will's. Looks like the Watsons are a lazy and selfish bunch of people. :)
I videoed the declaration of the laws, but need to upload it to youtube first.
The Israelites in Slavery-pretty much just read the chapter. The book gave an idea to make 'bricks' out of clay with grass and straw, but we didn't have time this week.
China and the Shang Dynasty-read the chapter, checked out the Chinese alphabet, learned some about silkworms and how silk is made from them, and just chatted about different facts that we learned.
Post test
I am behind on memory cards and maps. Along the way we always check out the globe to see where we are talking about, but no detailed map drawings...
